Shawn Bjorndal, PharmD

Shawn Bjorndal is a pharmacist, pharmacy leader, and consultant with more than 20 years of experience in pharmacy. His work focuses on regulatory compliance, operational improvement, and helping pharmacy organizations navigate complex challenges. He currently leads a pharmacist-run utilization management program for a large academic health system, covering medical-benefit prior authorization, criteria application, and monthly outcome reporting.

Shawn’s leadership experience includes Pharmacist-in-Charge roles in retail, hospital outpatient, and large-scale mail-order pharmacy. As Pharmacist-in-Charge for the fulfillment arm of the nation’s largest insurer, he led a comprehensive overhaul of controlled substance and opioid policies. His work strengthened compliance practices and supported the organization’s achievement of URAC Opioid Stewardship accreditation.

Throughout his career, Shawn has managed 133 Board of Pharmacy complaints and regulatory responses, helping teams and executives address sensitive issues in pharmacy practice. He brings firsthand experience navigating regulatory scrutiny and a practical understanding of how policies, workflows, and leadership decisions affect both compliance and patient care.

Shawn also founded PGxAlly to help pharmacists explore the integration of pharmacogenomics and medication therapy management into practice. Across his consulting and leadership work, he helps organizations translate complex requirements into clear policies, workable processes, and accountable operations.
